a-christmas-carol-3d-still-1-330x186Disney announced A Christmas Carol will be its first digital 3D release on Blu-ray Disc, expected to hit shelves sometime in the fourth quarter. The film, directed Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey, will debut what Disney calls a “new premium lineup” of digital 3D films for home viewing.

Disney says they will also release a 3D Showcase Disc which will contain teasers for upcoming 3D films like Alice in Wonderland and Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3. From 1953, an animated short film titled Working for Peanuts will also be featured on the disc.

Bob Chapek, President of Distribution for The Walt Disney Studios said, “We are excited to offer consumers an incredible line-up of true three-dimensional films and footage that will revolutionize the in-home entertainment experience.”

While 3D technology was in full swing at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, what was lacking was 3D content. With only a few digital 3D movies set to release on Blu-ray Disc this year, it’s hard to imagine anyone purchasing a 3D television any time soon. Although, ESPN’s announcement to carry at least 85 games in 3D this year (starting in June), and DirecTV’s plans to launch 3D dedicated channels (also expected in June), may be a good enough reason to buy a 3D HDTV and plan pick up that Christmas Carol disc around the holidays.

Reminiscent of the way sports pushed high-definition television at its inception, it may be sports again to push a new format, while studios scramble for more digital 3D movies to package.
