DIRECTV added 4 new HD channels yesterday but may have disappointed many customers who expected 30 new HD channels. The additions of ABC Family HD (Ch. 311), Planet Green HD (Ch. 286), Showtime Showcase HD (Ch. 541) and Showtime Extreme HD (Ch. 542) are welcome additions to the lineup but don’t bring the satellite provider’s HD offerings up to 130 as was promised. Amazon is having a sale on selected Blu-ray Discs that discount the retail by 40-45%. The discount really puts Blu-ray at an affordable price, and for the most part these are not your discount bin titles. The best deal they have going is Ocean’s Thirteen for $19.95. Kill Bill Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 on Blu-ray will simply be what is was when it was released on DVD, a two-pack of the individually discs, except this time in high-definition. The Blu-ray Disc set is priced at $69.98, and individual discs priced at $34.99. No discount on the 2-pack, but you would expect retailers to drop the price. Batman: Arkham Asylum, what is described as a “haunting, action detective game,” is coming to Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Windows in 2009. Batman: Arkham Asylum puts you in the role of Batman as he battles the Joker and other Gotham villains. I’m looking forward to this release, as the original script for the game was written by Batman writer Paul Dini. Full Story »
Cable television provider Comcast will be rolling out a new action based VOD channel with studio MGM this week, The Associated Press reports. The channel named “Impact” will have 20-30 titles every month featuring action movies and TV shows. MGM will pull titles from its 1,000+ library of action films and shows. Full Story »
Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2 will be released on Blu-ray Disc September 9. The 2-disc high-definition set is now available for pre-order on Amazon. However there is some speculation about whether or not to wait for the release of the elusive director’s cut Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair, a box set that was much anticipated on standard DVD but never realized in the United States. Panasonic announced yesterday it is looking for more families to participate in its “Living in HD program,” a study of American families living “living in high definition.” The company currently has 30 families involved in the program but will increase that number to 60 in 2009 and eventually 100. Yet another Keanu Reeves Blu-ray release slated for October 14th, The Ultimate Matrix Collection will be released along with graphic novel based Constantine. Should we name October 14th “Keanu Reeves Day?” Two great films being released the same day on BD…the only question is which should I pick up first?
The Matrix, while revolutionary for its time, does seem a bit dated in moments. The “Matrix-branded” 360-degree camera movements wowed fans at the time, but ended up being so overused in the industry that its effect seems to have been reduced to more of a gimmick. Full Story »
THX 1138 directed by George Lucas looked surprisingly well in high-definition (HD) on Friday night. The 1971 science fiction film was the first feature-length film directed by George Lucas. Now considered by some to be a “cult classic,” it was remastered and released on DVD in 2004. HDNet presented the film in letterbox format to preserve the 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Full Story »

Comcast, the television/voice/internet provider and now self-described “video game pioneer,” is giving away Wii gaming systems. Customers who subscribe to the Preferred Plus or Premier Triple Play packages will receive the Wii system as part of promotional partnership with Nintendo. Cablevision has added 15 HD (High-Definition) channels to their lineup, reaching 60 HD programming choices for customers. The high-definition channels are available at no extra charge for customers who subscribe to their iO TV service. The new HD channels are launching across Cablevision service areas all this week. “JFK”, directed by Oliver Stone, will debut on Blu-ray Disc on November 11. The high-definition release will be accompanied by the release of a “Three-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition” on standard DVD.
The Blu-ray Disc will be sold with special hardcover book packaging, press materials and photographs from the film. The three-disc DVD package will include the Two-Disc Special Edition Director’s Cut which adds 17 minutes to the film. It also includes the documentary Beyond JFK: A Question of Conspiracy and other JFK memorabilia . Full Story »
Warner Home Video will debut the high-definition Blu-ray Disc release of Constantine on October 14. The film was originally released in high-def in June of 2006 on the now defunct HD DVD format. No details on specs yet but Warner says the disc will include hours of extras including the IME (In-Movie-Experience), documentaries and deleted scenes. Full Story »
