Todd Greenwald, an analyst at Signal Hill Capital Group in Baltimore was quoted as saying, “For the first time since the console launched, I really think there’s more reason to buy a PS3 than the 360.” He’s got good reason. Full Story »
Sony confirmed yesterday that it recalled the latest firmware update for the PS3. The 2.40 update was released on Tuesday, and reports of problems started appearing right away on PS3 websites.
The company said the bugs were only experienced by a limited amount of PS3 owners. In an email to InformationWeek, Sony said “We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
2.40 software update for Sony’s Playstation 3 is officially available. The upgrade enhances person-to-person gaming by adding the long awaited XrossMediaBar (XMB) which allows players to link to other each other and communicate. Sony said it expects Blu-ray to reign in profits close to $10 billion annually within three years. The company also said its gaming business would be profitable by the end of the fiscal year in March, 2009, much in part to increased PS3 software sales as well as lowered PS3 production costs. Reports are that Hellboy: The Science of Evil is now shipping for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Sony PSP. The in-stock date noted on Amazon is June 27, just a couple days away. Sony, the creator and manufacturer of Playstation 3, revealed yesterday that the company lost $2.16 billion in 2007, and $1.16 billion in 2008 on the PS3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, sold 464,926 copies in Japan during the first week of release. The game went on sale on June 12, and stayed at the top of the software charts. Sony will cease to offer the Playstation 3 80GB bundled with “Motorstorm.” Instead of “Motorstorm,” newer bundle releases will include “Metal Gear Solid 4” and a DualShock 3 controller. Sales of “Grand Theft Auto IV” (GTA IV) broke the 24 hour sales record in the U.K. Sales topped 609,000, breaking the previous record set by “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” at 501,000 copies. The game is now the fastest selling game ever in the United Kingdom. Full Story »
Coming this Fall for the holiday season, MotorStorm 2 will take place in the lush Pacific Islands. The high def no rules racing game will put you in the drivers seat of ATVs, motorbikes, monster trucks and other off-road vehicles. You’ll be racing through thick jungle, swamps and lava pools. Playstation.Blog anticipates the new version of MotorStorm will allow up to 16 players online and 4 players in a split-screen mode.
In a side-by-side comparison, Gameplayer.com.au out of Australia was able to play “The Bourne Conspiracy” on both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The results? Running on Unreal Engine 3, they say that the Xbox graphics were “maybe” less jaggy than the PS3. But that’s about it. As far as frame rates and controls, no difference. Microsoft announced Saturday it would stop making the HD DVD add-on player for its xBox 360 gaming console. The company said Toshiba’s discontinuation of its HD DVD players, and poor market saturation, lead to the decision. Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida estimated the HD DVD add-on player only sold 300,000 units.
The Playstation 3 has endured a horrible introduction to the high def gaming world, but PS3 has survived. Now it’s set to prosper, and not just as a gaming unit.
With the upcoming 2.0 player profile requiring Blu-ray players to be networked, Sony finally gets to play its trump card: the PlayStation 3, which has clearly emerged as one of the best Blu-ray players on the market—and is likely to remain so for some time.
