Buggy PS3 update, Sony recalls

ps3 confirmed yesterday that it recalled the latest firmware update for the . The 2.40 update was released on Tuesday, and reports of problems started appearing right away on websites.

The company said the bugs were only experienced by a limited amount of owners. In an email to InformationWeek, said “We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”

PS3 upgrade rolls out

The upgrade enhances person-to-person gaming by adding the long awaited XrossMediaBar (XMB) which allows players to link to other each other and communicate. Running on Unreal Engine 3, they say that the Xbox graphics were “maybe” less jaggy than the . But that’s about it. As far as frame rates and controls, no difference. Microsoft discontinues xBox HD DVD player

The company said ’s discontinuation of its HD DVD players, and poor market saturation, lead to the decision. President Atsutoshi Nishida estimated the HD DVD add-on player only sold 300,000 units.

Sony PS3 models drop $100

ps3For you Playstation gamers out there who were hesitant to purchase the because of price, Sonys confirms that they will drop the price of its 40 GB gaming console by $100. The $499 model will now sell for $399.

also announced that their 80 GB will be dropped by $100, down to $499. The more expensive, larger hard drive model will come packaged with the Blu-ray movie “Spider-Man 3″, and also allow backward compatibility with Playstation 2 games, a feature that the lower priced does not have.

The also has a built-in player. So if you are looking to kill two birds with one stone, or more importantly save $500 on a player, get the . I strongly suggest getting the larger 80 GB model. Although its $100 more than the 40 GB, you get backward compatibility so you won’t have to have 2 units hooked up to your TV.
