Samsung has officially released pricing on its 2010 line of Blu-ray players ranging from $179 to $499. The BD-C6900 (which won Best of Innovations at CES 2010) features built-in 3D playback, Netflix and Blockbuster apps, social widgets, and a slim design with transparent cover (so you can be mesmerized by the spinning of your Blu-ray discs). The $200 Blu-ray player is the Sony BDP-S470 and it will handle 3D content after a firmware upgrade headed your way this summer. No it’s not quite a 3D player yet, but the firmware upgrade will make it one, along with the higher-end BDP-S570 ($250) player and the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 home theater systems. Full Story
Oppo has released the BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc player, their cheapest player yet at $289. The BDP-80 features 1080p24 at 24Hz, SACD & DVD-Audio/Video, and BD-Live (w/1GB memory). For audio the BDP-80 supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, 7.1 Channel output, and comes with digital optical and coaxial outputs. Full Story
LG’s newest top line Blu-ray player, the BD590, is the first to be built with an internal 250GB hard drive for storing digital files such as music, photos, and movies. The BD590 will also feature “MusicID-Stream” (from Gracenote), allowing users to get information about a song playing in a movie or TV show. Full Story
Panasonic was displaying its new portable Blu-ray players at CES 2010. The DMP-B500 is the higher-end model, with a 10.1 inch display and VIERA Link utilizing HDMI. In addition to being easy to carry along, this lil’ Blu-ray player can output 1080p to your HDTV. Full Story
Sony, in association with Panasonic, has just announced plans to increase the storage capacity on their Blu-Ray discs from 25GB to 35.4GB. Full Story
Last year at this time there were a few cheap Blu-ray players out there for around $150. But they were generic brands – you know the kind that probably work decent but you don’t brag to your friends about. Well this year there are several brand name models, even some with streaming capabilities, that are hard to pass up given the recent price drops. Full Story

The Sony PlayStation Store is not only a place for games (as described in Part II of my PS3 Slim review) but also for movies and television shows. Unlike Neflix’s all-you-can-watch-out-of-our-existing-streaming-library plan, which mostly offers a standard-def video experience on par with VHS playback or computer-quality streaming (lots of big fat pixels here n’ there, colors that bleed and an image that’s generally muddy), PlayStation Store patrons have a wider choice of true standard-def DVD quality or HD-quality films. Best Buy is promoting two Netflix enabled Blu-ray players which will allow Netflix content streaming. The Insignia brand Blu-ray players include the Advanced Series Blu-ray Player (NS-WBRDVD) and Connected Blu-ray Player (NS-BRDVD3). Full Story

The LG BD390 Blu-ray Disc player will add streaming HD service from VUDU later this month, via a free automatic upgrade. The new service allows BD390 owners to buy or rent movies and TV shows from VUDU’s HD library. Full Story
The Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray player will stream Netflix, YouTube, Slacker and on-demand content from the BRAVIA internet video platform. It appears content from YouTube and Slacker is ready to go, while Netflix integration will be added later this fall. Full Story
Certain Samsung Blu-ray players will be able to display YouTube content — the feature to be displayed at CEDIA EXPO 2009, from Sept. 10-13. The Samsung BD-P1600, BD-P3600 and BD-P4600 Blu-ray players will support user-contributed YouTube videos at no additional cost. Full Story
As expected, Toshiba has finally announced a Blu-ray Disc player. The once arch-enemy of Toshiba, Sony’s Blu-ray format will now be part of the Toshiba family of electronics. The BDX2000 Blu-ray player supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0), Bonus View and 1080p resolution at 24 frames-per-second. Full Story
The new Playstation 120GB “slim” model started shipping today, and with it the 3.00 firmware update. The update has some interface changes to the XMB with new Playstation Store shortcuts, and updates to trophies allowing display for add-ons. Full Story
2009 models of Panasonic Blu-ray Disc players with VIERA CAST now have access to Amazon’s video-on-demand (VOD) titles. The Amazon library consists of 1,000 high-definition (HD) titles including popular movies like “Knowing” and “Rush” and TV shows “House” and “Battlestar Galactica.” Full Story

At the same time Sony announced two 400-disc Blu-ray changers, the company also announced the BDP-S1000ES single disc ES player, which brings Sony’s Blu-ray Disc player line to 13 models. The high-end BD player adds to the ES line with built-in Wi-Fi for BD-Live access, 1080/60p, and 24p True Cinema. It is also compatible with Wi-Fi Protected Setup and Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA). Full Story
Today Sony announced two 400 Blu-ray Disc “Mega Changers” which I’m officially nicknaming “The Fat Boys.” The BDP-CX960 and BDP-CX7000 ES (Elevated Standard) 400-disc Blu-ray Disc changers will be released next month, as well as a new ES line single BD player labeled the BDP-S1000ES. Full Story
