Sharp adds yellow to create first consumer quad pixel 3D LCD

by Jeff Chabot on April 12, 2010

Now on sale in Japan, Sharp has developed a quad pixel (also known as four-primary-color) 3D LCD HDTV which fixes those unwanted “ghost” images, adds brightness (apparently the industry’s highest) and adds depth to 3D images. The new 3D solution combines four types of LCD technology: V2A technology; four primary-color technology; FRED technology; and side-mount scanning LED backlight technology. Primarily, we are excited about the addition of “yellow” to the LCD pixels. Can’t wait to see one in the U.S.

(Read on for explanations of each combined technology.) Full Story

3D Battle: Cameron and Bay Slam 2D-to-3D Conversions

by Christian Hokenson on March 23, 2010

James Cameron has already come out swinging in the past months over the major studio’s rush to present all their blockbuster films, whether worthy of such treatment or not, in 3D.  Since the studios and minor distributors have figured out that they can rake in more first weekend dollars on 3D releases (and more so with faux-IMAX presentations) rather than their 2D versions, more and more titles are now planned for 3D presentation. Panasonic sells out first batch of 3D HDTVs

by Jeff Chabot on March 20, 2010

On Mar. 10 Panasonic put a 50-inch plasma 3D HDTV package on shelves in New York City that included a 3-D Blu-ray player and one pair of RealD shutter glasses. The Panasonic model TC-P50VT20, sold exclusively at Best Buy, sold out within a week. Apparently the big $2,900 sticker (extra glasses $150 bucks each) didn’t stop early adopters from being the first to own the TVs, and those in New York will be set up to watch the first hockey game in 3D on Mar. 24. Panasonic hasn’t revealed exactly how many 3D units have sold, but they are currently taking back-orders from retailers.

So Cal Edison sends mail regarding HDTV purchases

by Jeff Chabot on December 4, 2009

socal-edison-hdtv-mail
Got an interesting piece of mail today from Southern California Edison which addresses the HDTV energy usage issue (see pic of front). The message of the mailer is that Energy-Star qualified TVs use up to 30% less energy than others without suffering quality in picture or design. The initiative was funded by California utility customers under the “auspices” of the California Utilities Commission. In case you didn’t know, California is posed to place restrictions on HDTVs sold after Jan. 1, 2011. (See our last article regarding future HDTV regulations in California.) Get more information on the initiative at SCE’s “Save Energy, Money, and the Environment” web page.
