Amazon to challenge Netflix streaming movies

According to The Wall Street Journal retail giant Amazon.com may challenge the Netflix streaming product with a service of their own. Apparently the company has been in talks with NBC, Time Warner, News Corp. and Viacom to get content distribution rights to TV shows and film titles. If things fall into place, Amazon hopes to get the service launched this holiday season. Full Story

Blu-ray Deal: The Man with No Name Trilogy

Amazon’s “Blu-ray Boxed Deal of the Week” is The Man with No Name Trilogy, starring Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars (Disc 1), For a Few Dollars More (Disc 2), and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Disc 3). The Blu-ray Discs are presented in 1080p at 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The box set will ship Sept. 2 and is now available to pre-order for only $27.99 (List: $69.98). The sale runs through Sept. 4. Full Story

Amazon drops price of Avatar Blu-ray/DVD Combo

Amazon has dropped the price of this week’s upcoming Avatar release on Blu-ray/DVD Combo disc. The 2D version of Avatar was $24.99 (Reg. $39.99) but has been dropped 50-percent to $19.99. The two-disc set includes both high-definition Blu-ray and DVD versions. And, although no extras are included, producer Jon Landau says this strip-down version will have “the best picture and sound possible,” using all available BD space to maximize the quality of the film. (According to Landau, menus, extras, trailers and studio promotions will be omitted.) Avatar will release on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on Thursday, April 22, 2010, coinciding with this year’s Earth Day which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Amazon discounts ‘Epic’ titles on Blu-ray, DVD

Amazon is having a sale on several Blu-ray and DVD movies they label as “epic.” You may not agree all the titles are of the “epic” scale, but most are considered great films none-the-less. The Patriot (Extended Cut), Gandhi (+ BD Live), Seven Years in Tibet, and Glory are among the discounted titles. Other films categorized as epics include A Passage to India, Black Hawk Down, House of Flying Daggers, and Memoirs of a Geisha. Discounts range from 36% to 43% off the suggested retail price. ‘Twilight New Moon’ leads Blu-ray releases this week

The biggest release on Blu-ray and DVD this week is without a doubt The Twilight Saga: New Moon. But it won’t be part of Tuesday’s weekly list. Rather, the movie will hit the shelves on Saturday, Mar. 20. Walmart to carry exclusive Twilight New Moon Fan Edition

Walmart (now taking pre-orders) will exclusively carry “The Twilight Saga: New Moon Ultimate Fan Edition” which contains seven minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and a scene from the upcoming film. Best Buy dips into digital content delivery

Times this morning reports that Best Buy will be going the pure digital route, and offer content direct to the consumer with possible music and video-on-demand services.  As the market for DVD’s continues to shrink, it seems the new Blu-ray format doesn’t even seem to be getting a fighting chance amid consumer interest in getting content via broadband rather than through physical discs.  Full Story

Panasonic adds Amazon VOD to Blu-ray players

Amazon announced a 2-day sale on select HDTVs, including Sony Bravia, Panasonic VIERA, Samsung, and Toshiba models. Highlights of the sale include a list of HDTVs for under $499, some of them with free shipping.
