DirecTV to broadcast US Open in 3D

This Labor Day weekend DirecTV will broadcast select US Open tennis matches in 3D on n3D (channel 103) powered by Panasonic. The men’s and women’s third and fourth rounds will air daily in the afternoon from Sept. 4 through Sept. 6, and be available to customers who have a 3D TV system and have received the 3D software upgrade. DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket goes online for non-subs

Not a DirecTV subscriber? No matter. This season you’ll be able to purchase the NFL Sunday Ticket purely for online viewing. But, according to USA Today, the service is geared towards would-be DirecTV customers who cannot get satellite service. The article goes on to say that potential customers will have to prove they are unable to get DirecTV in order to purchase the $350 NFL Sunday Ticket online package (for example if they don’t have a clear south-facing view to place the satellite.) DirecTV launches Fox Soccer Channel HD and exclusive soccer coverage

DirecTV recently launched Fox Soccer Channel HD and promises over 320 exclusive soccer matches this season — including 28 European matches a week starting this month. DirecTV also launched GolTV HD on Aug. 1, and added Fox Soccer Plus matches in high-definition. Full Story

DirecTV adds Red Zone to NFL Sunday Ticket

Damages Moves to DirecTV

Damages Title

TV legal drama Damages will be moving exclusively to DirecTV. The Sony Pictures/FX production will air 20 new episodes during 2011 and 2012 on DirecTV’s 101 network. DirecTV also gained distribution rights for seasons 1 through 3. Damages stars Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, with episodes also including William Hurt, Lily Tomlin, Martin Short and Ted Danson. Damages broadcasts in 1080i HD and Dolby Digital 5.1.

Newest DirecTV HD channels

We thought we would update you with DirecTV’s latest additions to their HD channel lineup. For California residents, there are a couple regional additions which include CSN Bay Area HD and CSN California HD (Comcast SportsNet). No AMC HD for DirecTV & Dish

DirecTV and Dish Network customers are anticipating the fourth season of Mad Men which airs July 25 on AMC HD. But subscribers to the satellite services will be stuck with the standard-def versions because the providers have not been able to add the high-definition version of the show. Other AMC original shows broadcast in HD include Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Rubicon and The Prisoner. Full Story

Dish expands HD channel capacity with new satellite

Over the weekend Dish Network successfully launched EchoStar XV, the company’s second satellite launch of the year which will allow Dish to provide more HD channels to customers. The company still says it offers over 200 high-def channels (a disputed claim) which would be more HD channels than any other provider including DirecTV. Full Story

DirecTV’s 3D channel to broadcast MLB All-Star game

DirecTV will broadcast the first Major League All-Star game in 3D. The game will take place at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California on Tuesday, July 13. The 3D broadcast will be found on DirecTV’s n3D channel (Ch. 103), the satco’s recently added dedicated 3D channel powered by Panasonic 3D technology. Full Story

DirecTV completes 3D channel lineup

DirecTV has completed their promised launch of three dedicated 3D television channels which includes n3D, a linear channel powered by Panasonic featuring the NASCAR Coke Zero 400 race in 3D, DIRECTV Cinema which is offering IMAX titles Deep Sea 3D and Under the Sea 3D, and the previously launched EPSN 3D now covering the FIFA World Cup. Tri-Nations Rugby in HD on Fox Soccer Plus

Fox Soccer Plus will broadcast the Tri-Nations rugby union tournament between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa on July 10 live and in high-definition (HD). In the first match of nine (to be held in Auckland, NZ) we’ll see top-ranked All-Blacks battle against defending Tri-Nations champion team Springboks. Fox Soccer Plus will carry all nine of the matches of the tournament which will come to an end in September. Full Story

Other carriers get NASCAR 3D event

It didn’t take long for other carriers to get in on the NASCAR 3D action. Two days after NASCAR announced DIRECTV would carry the Coke Zero 400 race on July 3, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House have been added to the list of carriers. The coverage will be presented in TNT’s Wide Open widescreen letterbox format free of commercial breaks. The broadcast will feature two custom 3D feeds – one from various 3D cameras set up along the track and the other capturing pit crew action. Full Story

NASCAR in 3D comin’ at ‘cha!

Turner Sports will be bringing NASCAR to your home theater in 3D, starting on July 3, 2010 with the Coke Zero 400 race. This will be NASCAR’s first 3D production and will be available to DirecTV customers (the only TV service mentioned so far) as well as online at NASCAR.COM through their RaceBuddy3D service. 3D hype week, FIFA, and more

This past week was full of hype about emerging 3D technology as ESPN launched its ESPN 3D network last Friday with the opening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico. But, not everyone will be able to view the 25 planned matches in 3D. According to CEA less than 1-million households are actually capable of viewing the three-dimensional broadcasts. Not only do you need a 3D TV but you also need a service provider who will be broadcasting the matches – DirecTV and Comcast announced carriage early on, while AT&T announced they would carry ESPN 3D just a few days before the launch on Friday. DirecTV to expand local HD markets

DirecTV will expand its local HD service next month with the addition of 16 new markets. The additions will bring their total local HD markets up to 155, covering more than 97-percent of U.S. TV households. Major networks ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC will be offered to customers where available. Full Story
