NASA goes social on Flickr

NASA has added thousands of historical images to the Flickr “Commons,” a section of the photo sharing website that allows users to tag and contribute to content made available for public use. The Flickr initiative is compiled of three categories: “Launch and Takeoff”; “Building NASA”; and “Center Namesakes.” Full Story

NASA launches full-time HD channel

NASA logoThe National Aeronautics and Space Administration has launched a full-time HD channel today, making its MPEG-2 high-definition feed available to cable, satellite, and other media companies. NASA announced they would be launching the channel last Friday. Full Story

Star Trek’s Brent Spiner narrates NASA Hubble documentary, HD download available

NASA is celebrating 20 years of Hubble Space Telescope operations with a documentary airing today at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 8 p.m., and 10 p.m. Eastern Time. The documentary is narrated by actor/writer Brent Spiner who is known for his role as Lt. Commander Data in Star Trek films and TV episodes. Full Story

Shuttle Mission STS-130 set for early Sunday launch: Update

Shuttle-Mission-STS-130-patchEndeavour’s 13-day, STS-130 mission is scheduled for liftoff at 4:39 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7. HDNet will start covering the lift off at 4:00 a.m., with a re-broadcast the launch on Sunday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. ET. This is the last scheduled night time launch for the Space Shuttle Mission. HDNet to cover Endeavour shuttle launch tonight

Don’t miss the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour scheduled for tonight at 7:39 p.m. Eastern Time. HDNet will start covering the event at 7:00 p.m. ET, taking place at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. (NASA TV started coverage yesterday with the pre-launch press conference and rotating service structure retraction.) NASA broadcasting HD shorts today

NASA is broadcasting a couple video shorts which started today at 10 a.m. ET. The first is a 20-minute piece that documents 167 feet of the space station’s pressurized modules and shows how equipment and supplies are stored. A shorter 5-minute piece explains the Canadian Bodies In the Space Environment (BISE), which studies how humans orient themselves in zero gravity. Full Story

HDNet to cover nighttime Space Shuttle launch

HDNet will provide live coverage of the 28th U.S. mission to the International Space Station tomorrow night, Mar. 11, in high-definition. The Space Shuttle Discovery STS-119 will launch from Kennedy Space Center at the scheduled time of 9:20 p.m. ET. HDNet will begin their live coverage of the event at 9:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. PT). High definition ‘NASA missions’ sneak previews

NASA unveils HD footage

Today NASA will unveil more than 100 hours of historical film restored to high-definition. The footage, from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions will be presented to NASA Administrator Mike Griffin at the U.S. Capitol, and made available to researchers and the general public. Full Story

The Earth in High Definition

nasa logoIn honor of Earth Day on April 22, NASA will be broadcasting images of the Earth in high definition on NASA Television.

The HD imagery, taken by astronauts, will start airing on Friday, April 18th. The hour-long broadcast will feature silent Earth views from the perspective of shuttle trips and the International Space Station. Full Story
