Understanding Mass Effect 2: the modern RPG

by Matthew Rudd on January 30, 2010

Mass Effect 2 is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive games that I have ever had the pleasure of playing. The fidelity of the graphics engine, the cinematic story telling and the rich universe that BioWare has created are light years ahead of anything else on the market today. However, as I play Mass Effect 2, I can’t help but question whether I am witnessing the evolution of the modern roleplaying game or the modern shooter. It’s an identity crisis that continually jolts me from my immersion in the story and makes me concerned about the homogenization of one of my favorite gaming genres. Full Story

PlayStation 3 gaining developer support in 2010?

by Matthew Rudd on January 19, 2010

Since its launch in 2006, the PS3 has had a rather rocky relationship with third-party game developers. The Xbox 360 is regarded by most as the more programer-friendly console and has, therefore, been the lead platform for most studios in the early development of their multi-platform titles. However, after years of disappointing PS3 ports, development studios seem to be making the switch to help ensure an equal experience on both platforms. Full Story

ufc undisputed 2010Today THQ announced that UFC Undisputed 2010 will be available May 25th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PSP. Batman: Arkham Asylum sequel in the works

by Bryan Sharp on December 14, 2009

joker batman arkham asylumThe overwhelming assumption about Batman: Arkham Asylum before release was that a Batman game couldn’t provide a worthwhile gaming experience. So I wasn’t the only one shocked when the game garnered critical acclaim and positive reviews. The game’s developer, Rocksteady, is hoping to surprise us again with the recently announced sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Full Story

EA announces new Medal of Honor for fall 2010

by Bryan Sharp on December 2, 2009

medal of honor thumbA reboot to the Medal of Honor franchise has been rumored for a few months, and today EA made it official by announcing a new Medal of Honor game with a planned fall 2010 release. Players will take control of the Tier 1 Operator, an elite soldier handpicked to face challenges that no other soldier can manage. The game is set in modern day Afghanistan, which probably has nothing at all to do with the success of a modern war game from another publisher. Full Story

red dead redemption thumb1Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption is set for an April 2010 release for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Redemption is Rockstar’s followup to Red Dead Revolver and promises a dusty Western filled with guns, mustaches, and horses.
