The week in HD gaming — a wrap up

I haven’t picked up Assassin’s Creed 2 yet as I’ve been too busying assassinating zombies in Left 4 Dead 2. I’m pretty confident that bashing zombies with a variety of melee weapons will keep me entertained for a shocking amount of time.

Xbox will add streaming HD, social apps, audio, and news

xbox live logoIn a couple days Microsoft will expand the capabilities of its Xbox LIVE service, adding the ability to stream high-definition movies from Zune in full 1080p HD. Social networking apps Facebook and Twitter will also be added, as well as audio from Last.Fm and a news section with MSNBC content. Full Story

Microsoft improves Xbox LIVE experience

‘Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 3′ now available for download

Activision has released “Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 3″ for download on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 game consoles. The pack, which costs 800 MS Points with Xbox LIVE and $9.99 at the Playstation Store, includes three new multiplayer maps and one Zombie map. Full Story

‘Halo Legends’ short anime films coming this Fall

Microsoft has teamed up with a number of animation partners including Japanese studio Toei Animation (see anime interpretation on right) to create a series of short films based on the “Halo” franchise. ‘Watchmen: Complete Experience’ 2-disc hybrid released today

“Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience” for Playstation 3 was released today. The hybrid PS3 game and Director’s cut version of the film comes as a Blu-ray two-disc set that retails for $49.99 (Amazon currently has it for $46.99). Full Story

‘Serious Sam HD’ announced for Xbox 360

Majesco Entertainment will bring Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD to Xbox LIVE for the Xbox 360 late this summer. A collaboration between Croteam (creators of Serious Sam) and Devolver Digital, Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD was built using a new version of the CroTech engine and this time rendered in High-Definition. Zune HD a go for Fall ‘09

Microsoft has confirmed the Zune HD for Fall ‘09 release in the U.S. The player will combine a built-in HD Radio receiver, high-definition (HD) video output capabilities, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touch screen, Wi-Fi and an Internet browser. The Zune portable media player will also extend to the Xbox Live video marketplace, a community of 17 million subscribers. Full Story

Star Trek D-A-C now on Xbox LIVE

Paramount Digital Entertainment launched the Star Trek D-A-C for Xbox 360 in conjunction with the release of the latest Star Trek film. The game is inspired by the film where players take the helm and engage in multi-player or co-op battles. You can choose between Romulan and Federation Starships, and of course the U.S.S. Enterprise. ‘Halo Wars’ now available on Xbox Live

Microsoft has just released the demo for its upcoming title, Halo Wars. The game, developed by the now disbanded Ensemble Studios, is Halo’s first venture into the real-time action strategy genre. This 1.4GB download will give players a quick glimpse of the legendary war between the Covenant and UNSC (sorry folks, the Flood are not playable) before the full game is released. Full Story

‘Resident Evil 5′ trailer released

The trailer for Resident Evil 5 was released on Xbox Live last Friday. Here is a good quality version of the trailer from YouTube. It runs over 5 minutes long. The two-level demo for the game will be released for Xbox 360 on Jan. 26. Full versions will be released for Xbox and PS3 on March 13.

New chapters for Xbox ‘Tomb Raider: Underworld’

Microsoft and and Eidos Interactive have agreed upon releasing two new downloadable chapters of Tomb Raider: Underworld. The chapters will be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace for Xbox 360 within months, promising to be worthwhile additions to the upcoming release of the game. Gaming classic ‘Mega Man’ on Xbox Live

Microsoft has put the 2-D classic Mega Man on Xbox Live Arcade. The latest version, Mega Man 9, retains its retro look but adds 50 new enemies and bosses to battle. It adds over a dozen challenge levels and ranks you on the Xbox Live leaderboard ranking system. Full Story
