YouTube now supporting 4k Quad HD resolution

Still from "Lupe" by Evin Grant First they added 720p HD, then 1080p HD, now YouTube has gone even further by offering 4k HD video. The 4096×2304 resolution format is immense, takes much longer to stream, and can really only be appreciated on high resolution output devices such as a projector or giant TV. You also might crash your PC trying to view the 4k video. But all that doesn’t matter. YouTube has just become “cooler” by launching a resolution higher than even television service providers offer. Viacom’s Tricky, But Google’s Trickier

Perhaps you heard toward the end of last week about the Viacom/YouTube tussle going before the courts.  While it’s not specifically HD related, and the case is now three-years old, the legal wrangling is fun to watch and does have some impact on the quality of videos you’ll see on YouTube as well as YouTube’s potential beyond infantile humor related posts and bad 80’s music videos. LG Blu-ray player features NetCast, Wi-Fi and 250GB HD

Sony BDP-N460 streams Netflix, YouTube

The Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray player will stream Netflix, YouTube, Slacker and on-demand content from the BRAVIA internet video platform. It appears content from YouTube and Slacker is ready to go, while Netflix integration will be added later this fall. Full Story

Samsung Blu-ray players to support YouTube

Certain Samsung Blu-ray players will be able to display YouTube content — the feature to be displayed at CEDIA EXPO 2009, from Sept. 10-13. The Samsung BD-P1600, BD-P3600 and BD-P4600 Blu-ray players will support user-contributed YouTube videos at no additional cost. Full Story

YouTube enables larger HD video uploads

YouTube launches movie trailers page, offers full length movies

You may be asking yourself “What took so long?” but YouTube has finally launched a movie trailers page. Video resolution is defaulted to YouTube’s “Normal Quality” but you can click on the “HD” icon in the player to get a higher resolution and larger preview. Full Story

Dailymotion adds support for video format Ogg

Online video provider Dailymotion added support for the open video format Ogg, and will soon have 300,000 videos encoded with the format. The company is adding support for the new video HTML tag which will be available with the beta release of Firefox 3.5. Full Story

YouTube testing HD quality videos

YouTube is apparently testing higher quality, or possibly HD resolution videos. Higher quality video on YouTube would certainly retain users and keep the company competitive with emerging video sites like hulu.com which has higher quality and even widescreen format video. I wrote a story a while back about how you can view higher resolution Youtube videos by adding “&fmt=18″ (without quotes) to the end of the url string in your browser’s address bar. YouTube higher resolution &fmt=18 a hack?

If you are a YouTube junkie you may have noticed a new link “watch in high quality” that has been appearing on certain videos. The link takes you to a higher quality version of the video, which in some cases makes a drastic difference. If you don’t see the link, you can add “&fmt=18″ to the end of the url to view the higher quality. Full Story
