Other high definition disc formats to note

by Jeff Chabot on March 31, 2008

dvdsPC World Australia just published a good article briefly explaining other high definition (HD) disc formats besides our reigning champ “Blu-ray Disc” and the now defunct “HD DVD” format. Most of these formats are based oversees and expand upon the red laser technology used to burn DVDs.

The formats improving upon red laser technology to increase disc capacity include Enhanced Versatile Disc (EVD), Forward Versatile Disc (FVD), and HD Versatile Multilayer Disc (HD VMD).

One format which seems the most promising is HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc), which uses holographic technology to store up to 2TB (that’s two terabytes!) on one disc.
